Goldeneye 007 Nintendo 64
Goldeneye 007 is one of the best games for the Nintendo 64.
Goldeneye 007 is the most fun game on the Nintendo 64. It’s the only reason that I bought the Nintendo 64 system..
Goldeneye 007, released in 1997, is based on the movie by the same title. There’s a single player story mode where you must complete numerous objectives to advance from one stage to another. Many of the stages are modeled after places seen in the movie.
The single player mode will keep you busy for hours. There are 20 stages to fight through on three difficulty levels. Also, there is a “cheat options” menu built into the game. Completing stages within a certain time limit activates cheats such as “all guns,” “infinite ammo,” and “invincibility.” These features provide long-lasting playability. I’ve been playing Goldeneye 007 on and off for more than a decade!
Multi-player mode makes it even more addictive. My friends and I murder each other for hours, shooting AK47s and grenade launchers. There is a wide assortment of weapons to choose from and environments to fight in.
The battles can accommodate up to four players, dividing the screen into two or four sections. This makes the field of view smaller and a strain on the eyes, but it’s not too bad if you play on a big television.
The graphics were groundbreaking in 1997, but what I remember most are some of the AI features. Enemies react to you in a variety of ways, most notably they hop on one leg if you shoot them in the foot or look around dumbfounded if you shoot their hat off their head. Furthermore, you can zoom in using a scope on your sniper rifle, taking out enemies from great distances. Goldeneye 007 was the first first-person shooter that I played with such a feature.
There is a wide assortment of weapons, old, modern and sci-fi, exactly what you would expect from a James Bond game. Sometimes I like to sneak around and execute enemies with silenced pistols, deal death from afar with a sniper rifle or shred everything with double RC-P90s. Occasionally when I need to vent my rage, I annihilate all comers with a rocket launcher. A few stages even allow you to commandeer a tank.
I can’t commend this game enough. It’s a masterpiece and it set the standard for first-person shooters. I want to dust off my old Nintendo 64 and play Goldeneye 007 again.
