Keeping the dirt, rocks and crumbs off of your flooring will not only help it look cleaner, it will prevent against scratches and nicks. The frequency of vacuuming will depend on your lifestyle and how often your carpet and floors need a cleaning. Small children and pets will certainly make your vacuum scheduling more frequent!

Many professional carpet cleaners do floors as well, so you may be able to kill two proverbial birds with one stone. How To Choose A Paint Color Scheme For Any Room

Many of us find we need a little help when it comes to choosing color schemes and the finishing touches when decorating our home. This article will provide you with ideas and suggestions for doing just that .

First look around you and your home and determine what colors you are drawn to. Look at the accessories you have around your home that you really like. Flip through some magazines and see which pages of images you are drawn to which will give you a good sense of what you are attracted to in regards to colors and decorating styles.

Look at the paintings in your home that you like and this will remind you of the things you enjoy visually.

You can look through photographs you have of vacation spots. Make notes of the colors that appeal to you which will give you a good sense of what colors you are naturally drawn to.

Seek out help: Observe friends homes. You can learn a lot about what appeals to you by combining ideas from several homes as well as what you don't care for.

Visit showrooms: You can observe the work from designers since there are many showrooms that display entire rooms.

Try out technology: You can try out an array of different color schemes and designs with the many computer programs available today before making any final decisions.

Consider lighting: Since lighting affects color you need to be aware of the rooms lighting. Consider the natural lighting as well as the artificial lighting before selecting a color scheme.

Choosing accessories: You should choose your accessories for a room before deciding on the main color scheme.

Use Swatches: A great idea for a swatch is to paint lining paper the color your considering. You will want to have a large size of lining paper to paint so it will cover enough of the wall to give you a good idea of how the color looks on a particular wall. Tape the paper to the wall so you can see how the light changes throughout the day since this will have an effect on how the paint looks.

Many of the do-it-yourself stores have web-sites where you can create an outline for the rooms your wanting to paint and redecorate. This enables you to look at different types of wallpaper and paint so you can match color schemes and designs. These stores also carry sample bottles of paint you can purchase for $2.99 to $4.99 - usually about 4 oz. in size - so you can try it out on the wall before making a final decision.

There are many on-line question and answer sites where you can upload photos of the room your wanting to paint or redecorate. Along with the photo(s) you can write a couple paragraphs of what you would like to accomplish with the room and ask for others suggestions and advise.

How to design a bay window!

The idea of a bay window is so 1980's. But look to the past and you start to see new ways to integrate the bay.

I have had many clients in the past tell me they want a bay window. Sometimes I have been a bit reluctant to the idea because I have seen so many bad examples. The image below is a very typical example of the contemporary application of the bay. To me this just looks like they cut a hole in the wall and slapped on the window unit. It just doesn't look integrated.

On the other hand my recent trip to the Napa Valley area reminded me that the bay window can be a beautiful design element when properly integrated with the architecture of the house plan. Here are a few examples on mostly craftsman style houses - all discovered in the town of Napa.

Square box bay instead of the typical angled sides. Simple shed roof with exposed rafter tails and supporting brackets. Shingle siding wraps the box out.

Here the bay walls simply extend up until they meet the roof overhang, which is deep enough to receive them. The continuous trim above the windows and the cedar shingles also help to integrate the bay properly with the house. The brackets below help to give the bay a sense of support.

Here is an angled bay window fitting below a square gabled form. This gable integrates with the house in much stronger way than our "don't do this example". Also note the small window below the bay. This completes the composition and reinforces the idea that the bay was not an afterthought.

My favorite bay window example in Napa. You can tell the designer spent a lot of time studying the form and detail to properly integrate with the house. Beautifully executed!

How You And Your Toddler Can Be Eco Friendly

Whether you are already eco friendly or want to become eco friendly, sharing that with your toddler can be a great experience.

1. Light Bulbs.
I have discovered that low mercury, continuous spiral shape bulbs have given me tremendous savings. They come in different watts. I usually use the 75-100 watts. I used to have to replace blown out light bulbs numerous times a year. Since I started using the low mercury bulbs which was in 2008, I have not had to replace a light bulb yet. Yes, by the time your toddler is an adult there will probably be something better out there, but showing this to your toddler now will teach your toddler to be conscious of saving, aware of environmental issues, and help protect the environment. You want to train your toddler not raise your toddler.

2. Energy Efficient Washer & Dryer.

My husband and I have purposely chosen energy efficient washers and dryers for our home. The next time your toddler helps you with the laundry share that information about efficient washers and dryers, even though you might not have one. It is something that you might want to think about for the future.

3. Furnace Filters.

Allow your toddler to see you change your furnace filter. It is very simple to do. Show your toddler that dirty filter that you take out of the furnace and explain how changing the filter often helps your house retain the heat in the winter. Explain how the filters reduce the dust, mold, and allergy symptoms.

4. Recycling.

Next time you are on the computer explain to your toddler that you are using office paper that has been recycled. Inform your toddler that printer cartridges can be recycled also. Shopping bags can be recycled. These are good when grocery or department store shopping. Show the recycled bags to your toddler so he/she can learn the difference. If you are not using recycled paper, you might want to look into doing so, because it helps the environment. Below is a video explaining why it is important to recycle.

I also reused last years gift bags and use recycle bags when possible.
